Buying an alternative fuel vehicle is a major step in turning your life green. The purchase will reduce reliance on petroleum, and cut down CO2 emissions. But what if you buy and then find out there aren't any alternative fueling stations in your area? Of course, you could always sell tickets to your friends for a chance to sit behind the wheel of the car industry's answer to global warming.

Before you take out a second mortgage to save the planet, check the Department of Energy's alternative fueling station locator. The site lists stations available by city all across the country.

Fuels covered include:

• Compressed natural gas (CNG)

• Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG or propane)

• Ethanol E85

• Electric

• Biodiesel

• Hydrogen

• Liquefied natural gas (LNG)

The site also has a number of helpful tools for trip planning. A route planner allows you to tap in where you are, where you want to go, and any stops along the way, then produces available stations. This information will definitely come in handy during those summer road trips.

As of last count, there were 6,397 alternative fuel stations peppered across the country. Although that is a mere speck compared to the wealth of gas stations, the number does allow those with green vehicles to get from point A to point B without running out of fuel.

If you're on the cutting edge and have a hydrogen fuel cell in your car, you can't stray too far from California. But with the other fuel types, even E85, you should be able to still keep road trips on the list of things you love to do.
