Commercial Auto Insurance Minimum Requirements in Hawaii

To drive your commercial vehicle, you must prove your financial responsibility by having adequate insurance on your vehicles.
Ways to Establish Financial Responsibility
The state requires auto insurance; there is no other option for proving financial responsibility.
Determine Whether You Need Commercial Insurance
If you run a business that uses vehicles, you’re likely considering purchasing a commercial auto insurance policy. Think about:
- How many and what kind of vehicle(s) you need to insure
- How the vehicle(s) is being used
- Who drives the vehicle(s)
- Who owns the vehicle(s)
If you own a single car that only you use to drive around for your business, you might only need a private-vehicle policy. But if you have employees who use the vehicles on your company’s time, you should look into commercial policies to make sure you have enough coverage to protect the business.
If you need more help determining whether you need commercial or private insurance, contact your local officials.
Determine the Required Amount of Coverage
When you contact an insurance company to discuss what sort of coverage you need, they will ask you:
- Who owns the vehicle(s)
- Weight of the vehicle(s)
- Usage of the vehicle(s)
- Liability limits requirements
The minimum requirements for commercial vehicles are the same as for private:
- $20,000/40,000 Bodily Injury Liability
- $10,000 Personal Injury Protection
- $10,000 Property Damage Liability
- $20,000/40,000 Underinsured Motorist (optional)
- $20,000/40,000 Uninsured Motorist (optional)
If you own a business, you will likely need more than the minimum; otherwise, an accident that costs more than your insurance covers could result in you losing your assets.
For example, let’s say your employee ran the company truck through the window of a coffee house, causing $50,000 in damages. If you only have $10,000 worth of coverage, then you will have to pay the other $40,000 out of pocket. And if you don’t have the money, the other party could sue you.
Remember, insurance agents and your local officials can help you determine how much commercial coverage you need.
Purchase a Commercial Policy
Like for most other items, shopping around for a commercial insurance policy can pay off. Get more than one quote and compare what the insurance providers say about how much coverage you need and the costs.
Proof of Insurance and Financial Responsibility
You must carry with you a valid Hawaii auto insurance card to prove that you have insurance. Show this card if you ever get pulled over in a traffic stop, or if you’re in an accident.
Penalties for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility
Driving with no proof of insurance can result in fines from $100 to $5,000, depending on the courts. If you forgot to take your insurance card with you but were insured, the fine may be waived. The courts may also choose to give you community service instead of fines.
Driving without any insurance will result in the license of the driver or the vehicle’s registered owner being suspended from three months to a year. A non-refundable six-month insurance policy will also have to be purchased.
Repeat offenses can result in jail time, vehicle impoundment, and registration suspension.
