The Basics

An individual selling a car in the state of Hawaii must incorporate a bill of sale into the transaction. This essentially acts as a binding contract between the buyer and the seller. It also aids the buyer in the process of transferring the title into their name.

The form will need to be notarized, which helps to solidify its legality. Whatever type of document you end up using, just make sure it contains the following information:

  • Selling price
  • Name of the buyer
  • Make of the vehicle being sold
  • Year of the vehicle being sold
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • Odometer reading
  • Signature of the seller

Forms To Use

A couple of the island counties offer a bill of sale form online, including Hawaii County and the City and County of Honolulu. The form may be used in any county.
