In Georgia, you can renew your vehicle tags and registration in person at your local Tax Commissioner's office, by mail, and now in some counties you can renew online.

Online Renewals

Check with your local Tax Commissioner's office to see if your county offers online registration renewals for personal vehicles; if not, ask when it is expected.

Georgia counties mail out "pre-bills" for your renewal notice; you must have this pre-bill with a correct address to be eligible for online renewal. Expect to pay a transaction fee of $4.95, for up to 30 tags per transaction, in addition to your regular fees and taxes due. Most major credit cards are accepted.

The online service is not available to dealers, distributors, manufacturers, transporters, or those on the International Registration Plan (IRP).

What is a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)?

In Person and By Mail

When you renew your vehicle registration in person, you'll need to take a few things with you to your local Tax Commissioner's office:

  • Your current, valid driver's license; if renewing by mail, just send a copy of the license.
  • Appropriate taxes and fees due. Georgia provides an easy way to calculate your ad valorem taxes due; you'll need to know the type of vehicle, and it helps to know the first several digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Check the rate chart to determine the tag costs.

If you are renewing by mail, send the documentation and fees, in certified form of money order or cashier's check, to the mailing address of your local Tax Commissioner's office.

Registration Periods

Talbot County offers a four-month staggered registration, and the following counties offer a 4-month non-staggered registration period where you register your vehicle any time between January 1 and April 30:

  • Calhoun
  • Charlton
  • Clay
  • McIntosh
  • Mitchell
  • Randolph
  • Stewart
  • Turner

If you live in a county not listed above, then your county offers year-round registration. You need to register your vehicles during the 30 days prior to midnight on your birthday.

These registration periods are the same regardless of how you renew.
