History of DMV
Georgia's Department of Public Safety (DPS) was formed in March 1937. The DPS organized the first Georgia State Patrol School, offered at Georgia Tech in the summer of that year.
The DPS also oversees day-to-day operations of the Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division. The DPS operates with a committment to four core beliefs: trust, fortitude, compassion, and professionalism.
The Georgia State Patrol is a leader nationally with advances in technology and unique innovations. It was the first agency to equip all patrol cars with dash-mounted cameras, and each trooper receives specialized training in car pursuits.
The Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) was created after Congress enacted the Highway Safety Act in 1966. This act made the governor of each state responsible for highway safety in his own state. The mission of the program is to educate the public about highway safety and promote programs to help reduce traffic fatalities.
