Page OverviewDriver's License and ID Card
When your name changes due to marriage, divorce, or some other circumstance, you must change your name on your Georgia driver's license or ID Card within 60 days. There is no fee for the change during that time period, but you must appear in person at your local driver's license office to make it.
You'll need to present your current license, and a certified copy of the document changing your name―take your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or other court order showing the name change.
The new license will be valid the remainder of time on your current license, or if you're closer than 150 days to renewal, you can renew it at this time for five years for $20, or for 10 years for $35.
Registration and Title
Before you can change your name on your Georgia vehicle registration or title, you'll need to change it on your Georgia driver's license, so do that before heading to your local Tax Commissioner's office.
After you've changed your license, then you can change your title and registration at the same time. The process is basically the same as applying for a title the very first time. You'll need to complete the Title/Tag Application and provide the current title and registration, proof of insurance, and proof that your vehicle has passed a recent emissions inspection. You'll also need to furnish a certified copy of the marriage certificate, divorce decree, or other court document changing your name.
There is an $18 fee for the new title. If you make the changes during your regular registration period, you'll also need to pay the fees and taxes due at that time.
