Obtaining Handbooks and Manuals

Doing business with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) and its divisions can seem daunting if you don't have all the information you need. The sheer number of services and forms alone has given even the most intrepid applicant a headache.

But there's really no need to reach for the aspirin; the Florida DMV has made available a huge amount of information about its services and requirements, all neatly organized into a range of manuals and handbooks.

You can pick up any of these manuals at your local office of the Driver License or Motor Vehicle divisions. Or, you can check them out online. Some are in PDF format; you will need the free Adobe Reader to download and read PDF files.

Driver License Handbooks

Florida Driver's Handbook, available in English and Spanish, contains rules and regulations for operating a motor vehicle in Florida. This includes rules of the road and licensing requirements.

Florida Motorcycle Operator Manual, available in English and Spanish, contains rules and regulations for operating a motorcycle in Florida. Topics include rules of the road and alcohol laws.

Florida CDL Handbook contains licensing procedures and information on required testing for operating a truck or other commercial vehicle.

Motor Vehicle Manuals

Florida Motor Vehicle, Mobile Home, and Recreational Vehicle Dealers' Handbook contains regulations and requirements to become a licensed dealer, as well as the procedures for operating your business.

International Registration Plan (IRP) Trucking Manual offers instructions for obtaining "apportioned" registration for commercial and private vehicles in the State of Florida.

International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) Trucking Manual outlines requirements for obtaining registration under the IFTA, which simplifies fuel tax reporting procedures across the U.S. and Canada.
