We cover topics such as how to order standard and specialty plates in our License Plates and Placards section.

But, here are the answers to some common questions:

Is there a place where I can view all the types of special plates that are available?

Yes. The Division of Motor Vehicles has an online index of all available specialty license plate designs. Simply click on a listing to see a picture of the plate, as well as information on the cost and where the plate proceeds go.

How can I get antique plates for my vehicle?

For starters, your vehicle must be at least 30 years old to qualify for antique plate status. If it is, then bring your current registration with you to a county tax collector's office to receive the plates.

I just sold my car. What should I do with the plates?

Good question. The plates stay with you, not with the buyer of the car. So, remove them promptly after the sale.

You can then transfer your plates to another vehicle you own. Or, you can return the plates to a driver license or tax collector office where they can be canceled.

Failing to take either action could result in your license being suspended.

And, no, just giving your plates to someone else is not allowed.

Could I just mail the old plates to the state instead?

Yes. You may send the plates to:

  • Division of Motor Vehicles
  • Neil Kirkman Building
  • Mail Stop 63
  • Tallahassee, FL 32399-0500

Please indicate you want the plates to be canceled and recycled.

How often will I receive new plates?

Every six years, unless you request a duplicate plate sooner than that.

How do I renew my plates?

You have three methods to do this: in person, by phone, or online. See our Registration Renewals section for complete details.

Another individual may renew your plates for you, providing the person has your current registration or renewal notice, and your proof of insurance.

How do I order disability plates and placards?

There isn't a quick answer for this, but we cover the issue in our Drivers with Disabilities section.

Where do I place the registration decal?

On the top right-hand corner of the license plate.

My plates are damaged. How do I replace them?

We cover this task, as well as replacing stolen plates, in our Replacing a Lost Registration section.
