Discounts can save you a lot of money on insurance. Most insurance carriers provide discounts for who they determine are their best lower-risk drivers. While some things cannot be controlled, other situations that you can control can get you into qualifying for insurance discounts.

Learn about the discounts offered by many insurance companies and see if you qualify: bundling types of policies, good driver, good student, taking a motorcycle safety course, installing anti-theft equipment and senior discounts.

    Bundling

Bundling, society's new code word for packaging deals, has also found its way into the insurance world.

If you're unfamiliar with the term, it refers to receiving a discount for subscribing to several services with one provider. (more)

    Good Driver

Maintaining a spotless driving record is a plus to your wallet. Not only does it keep your insurance premiums low, but, depending on your carrier, it could also earn you a safe driver discount (some providers refer to it as a good driver discount). Massachusetts has even mandated safe driver discounts into law, under the Safe Driver Insurance Plan.

Each carrier adheres to a different incentive policy, based on your driving record. Some carriers, for instance, offer a 2% discount for every year you avoid an at-fault accident, topping out at 20%. (more)

    Good Student

Some car insurance companies give students another reason for maintaining high grades―insurance discounts.

Qualifications are likely to vary with your insurance carrier and your state’s regulations. And, if you have more than one honor roll student on your insurance policy, you might not receive full discounts for all of them. Rules greatly vary on this, so ask your insurance agent for clarification. (more)

    Motorcycle Safety Course

Taking a motorcycle safety course is beneficial for many reasons, not the least of which is an insurance premium discount.

Depending on your state, you could either see a flat dollar reduction in your rates or a percentage off your rates for taking the class. Usually, the discount is good over three years. Call your insurance agent to ask what applies in your state. (more)

    Safety/Anti Theft Equipment

Equipping your vehicle with anti theft devices will not only bring you peace of mind, but it might also save you money on insurance premiums.

Most insurance providers recognize proof of anti theft devices with discounts. The size of discount, which can go as high as 30%, depends on your carrier, place of residence, and number of theft-prevention devices. (more)

    Seniors

Mature drivers benefit from many discounts, but you will need to ask for them. Not every company offers all of these discounts, but some do so there might be potential for significant savings. Some insurance companies offer a 5% discount simply for being aged 50 to 55 and older.

Other companies may not offer a senior discount because of your age, but many offer a discount to mature drivers who completed an approved mature driving course. (more)
