My tag fell off my car. How do I replace it?

You'll need to report the loss to your local police department. They'll file a report, and you'll need a copy of that when you visit the local DMV office for a replacement. The cost for a replacement tag and validation sticker is $6. The state recommends that you request a different tag number; the DMV can track the old tag if it shows up on another car.

I backed into my garage and my tag was crushed. Can I get a new one?

Yes. Just take the crushed tag to your local DMV office and apply for a duplicate. The cost is $6.

Do I have to get an emissions sticker before I renew my tag?

Yes, if your vehicle is more than five years old. You'll get a renewal notice by mail 90 days before your tags expire. After the first inspection, you're required to get emissions testing every two years. Check out DMV.ORG's Smog & Emission Checks page for more information.

What is a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)?

Can I get a personalized tag for my car?

Sure. Check out DMV.ORG's License Plate Section for all the details.

I just heard about "low-speed vehicles" (LSVs). I live in a large community neighborhood so I'm thinking of buying one. Will I need to get a tag and title for it, like a regular car?

Yes, you'll need to tag and title the LSV. The first time you register it, the DMV will need to inspect the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and determine whether it meets all safety requirements. The fee for the inspection is $15. You'll also need to show valid Delaware insurance on the vehicle.

When you renew the registration each year after the first, you'll just need to complete a certified self-inspection form.

You can order a regular tag or a special or vanity plate for your LSV, with appropriate fees.

The state provides an information sheet about LSVs.

I have several pieces of recreational equipment, like ATVs, scooters, and golf carts. Do all of these have to be registered with the state?

It depends on the vehicle. Check DMV.ORG's Other Types of Vehicles for all the details for each of these.

I'm moving out of state. What should I do with my car tag?

Once you've registered the vehicle in your new state, you must mail the Delaware tag and a letter notifying the DMV about your move to:

  • Division of Motor Vehicles
  • Attn: Registration Section
  • P.O. Box 698
  • Dover, DE 19903

How can I get antique plates?

If your vehicle is at least 25 years old, and if it meets a few other basic requirements, you may apply for antique plate status.

To obtain this status, head to a DMV office with the vehicle title. Also bring a DMV inspection certificate issued within the past 90 days. You'll need to pay a one-time fee of $25 for antique status.

Once your application has been processed, you'll receive one antique plate to be attached to the front of your vehicle. The plate will be in addition to the ones currently issued for your vehicle. Be sure to renew your registration to keep both the plate and vehicle current.

The DMV provides additional information on this procedure.
