Application Forms

All Vehicle Salesperson Licensing forms are available online. They can be ordered by calling (916) 229-3128. The application package also includes additional licensing information.

Procedures

  1. Obtain the application package.
  2. Complete the application.
  3. Submit your application and fees to the local Inspector Office.
  4. If you have general licensing questions, call (916) 229-3128.

Fees

The fees to become a licensed vehicle salesperson are:

  • $50 Non-refundable application fee
  • $1 Family Support Program fee
  • $50 Reinstatement fee
  • $15 Duplicate or transfer license fee

Deadlines and Waiting Periods

The average time for processing an application may be up to 120 days from the date the completed application was received. This gives the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) time for investigation of the applicant, inspection of the place of business, and processing of the license.

Temporary Permits

After the applicant has met the requirements for the Vehicle Salesperson license, the department may issue a temporary permit for a period not to exceed 120 days, while it processes the application.

Renewal Details

The vehicle salesperson's license is valid for three years. You renew it three years from the date of issuance.

To renew, you will need to fill out an Application for Occupational License. This form is available online or ordered by calling (916) 229-3128. After you complete the form you will need to go to your local field office to submit your renewal form and pay your renewal fees:

  • $1 Family Support Program fee
  • $50 Renewal application fee

No Late Renewals

Late renewals are not accepted; you will need to complete a new application once the renewal period has passed.
