Duplicate Licenses

License photo reminding you of that bad haircut from your youth? Don't worry; you can visit any Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) or third-party office to take another photo and obtain a duplicate license for a $4 fee. You can also get a duplicate license if:

  • Your current license is lost, stolen or unreadable.
  • You change your name or address.
  • You want to remove your Social Security number from your license.
  • You want to convert a Class G graduated license to a class D operator license.

If you do not need to update your photo, you can obtain a duplicate license by calling (877) 301-8093 or going online. Both systems will require a credit card to cover the fee.

Motor Vehicle Record

Your motor vehicle record (MVR) is the history of your life on the road, including warnings, citations, and accidents. You can obtain your own record to see where you stand, but the MVR is primarily for your insurance company. They will use it to determine whether they want to cover you―and at what price.

When the MVD provides your insurance company with the report, it will cover the last 39 months, so your sailing should be smooth if you received your last drag racing title in 2002.

SR-22s

No matter how you look at it, an SR-22 is a punishment. The MVD can require you to carry an SR-22 for a myriad of reasons, but the top ones are failing to maintain proper insurance or licensing, and a conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

An SR-22 is a certificate from an insurance company that guarantees that you have auto liability insurance. The MVD will require it if you showed financial vehicular irresponsibility in the past. It is usually quite costly (sometimes tripling your insurance premiums), and most serious offenses require that you maintain the SR-22 for three years.

Moving Violation Penalties for Minors

The law regarding moving violations became harsher in 2001 for those with Class G graduated licenses. Teens under the age of 18 don't get many chances to prove they deserve the responsibility of driving in Arizona.

After the first citation, you can opt to enroll in a court-administered Defensive Driving Program to erase the points from your record. After the second ticket, you must attend Traffic Survival School, the course normally reserved for severe violations like driving under the influence. A third citation automatically grants you a three-month suspension of your license, and a fourth restricts you to the passenger seat for a full six months.

When it comes to DUI violations, it gets worse. As of 2001, anyone under the age of 21 who gets caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs loses their license for two full years.
