Driver Beware

Unless you’ve spent the last few months under a rock, you’ve heard about the rash of thieves spending time under our cars. They're on the hunt for the platinum inside catalytic converters, targeting the easiest vehicles to steal from―high ground clearance SUVs and pickup trucks. The thieves then sell these pricey-to-replace parts to scrap-metal dealers.

Valuable platinum inside the catalytic converters might get thieves anywhere from $7 to $60; the repair work might cost you close to a grand. So watch where you park, notify the police if you spot any suspicious activity and take your vehicle to a repair shop as soon as you hear the unmistakable sound of such a theft. Victims say it’s much like the brain-rattling rumble of a Harley.

Have Passport, Will Travel

When traveling by air, all U.S. citizens must present a passport or a secure travel document to reenter the United States. This includes children.

When traveling by land or sea, oral declarations of citizenship at the border will no longer get you through a U.S. border crossing. As of January 31, 2008 all U.S. citizens age 19 and older must present documentation proving identity and citizenship, such as a driver’s license plus a birth certificate; those younger than 18 are only required to show proof of citizenship.
