4442 Who Can Access Criminal Records

Think your criminal history is under lock and key? Think again. Criminal records are far from confidential.

Learn more about who can access criminal records.

Who Can Access Criminal Records?

Criminal records are public knowledge. So, for better or worse, anyone can access an individual’s criminal records.

Why Would Someone Want to Access Your Criminal Record?

Because criminal records are public information, nobody has to justify his or her reasons for performing a criminal background check on you.

Someone might want to know about your criminal record before hiring you or renting property to you. If someone plans on doing business with you, perhaps he or she would want to learn if you have a criminal history first. Someone might simply want to find out more about you.

Whatever the reasons, everyone has a right to perform criminal background checks.

What Can Someone Learn in A Criminal Background Check?

By performing a criminal record check, a person can learn all about your criminal history, including, but not limited to:

  • Arrests
  • Convictions
  • Drivers license suspensions

Try keeping your record clean to avoid any embarrassing information popping up on a criminal report.

How To Access Criminal Records

You can access criminal records in a number of ways:

  • Online. State, national, and third-party websites offer criminal background checks.
  • Offline. State and county courthouses and law enforcement agencies can provide information on a person’s criminal history. You can also access your own criminal record from your criminal defense attorney, if applicable.

Keep in mind that certain agencies might not have easy access to a person’s complete criminal record. So, if you plan on accessing a criminal record, ask each party how much information they can provide.

Has someone ever run a criminal history check on you? What for? Tell us about your experience in the comments section below.
