State-Approved Courses
Alabama leaves it up to its individual counties to administer their own traffic schools. Contact the court of the county where you got the ticket to see if you can be assigned to driving school. This includes whether you can take online courses. Go to the Traffic Service Center Web site for more information. Select your county, then General Information, then select the Driving School tab.
Most Alabama counties use the National Safety Council guidelines for traffic schools and driving improvement programs. You can check out its Web site for information about specialized programs including the Attitudinal Dynamics Course for problem drivers and repeat offenders and the Alive at 25 Parent Program for drivers between the ages of 16 and 24.
Ticket Dismissal and Point Reduction
In Alabama, points stay on your record whether or not you take defensive driving. However, the court may decide to dismiss the ticket if you complete traffic school. Your driving history and seriousness of the infraction play roles in this.
If you request driving school from a court, you'll have to complete the class and bring back a certification of completion. Then the judge will take it from there.
Fees
Because each county administers its own traffic school program, fees vary. Some courts require you to pay a fee to be referred to traffic school, in addition to other fees; this costs around $130.
Schools last about four hours on average.
Auto Insurance Discounts
If you want to take a driving course to help lower your auto insurance rates, contact your insurance company first. Your policy may not allow for such discounts.
