When you apply for a new driver's license, you'll get a vision screening. If you fail, visit your eye doctor. When you reapply for your license, bring in your new glasses or contacts, and a doctor's note stating that corrections have been made, or that your vision is good enough to drive.

Those with conditions that may hinder driving ability will be required to submit medical clearance before completing your driver's license application. You can also be asked to appear before a driver's license examiner at any time to prove your driving ability. This could occur after a traffic stop, or if your health has declined and has been reported. If you fail to report, or fail the test, your driver's license will be revoked.

Epileptic or other types of seizures can happen without warning, so the state of Alabama will suspend your license during the six months following an episode. To be reinstated, you have to be seizure-free for a full six months, and get medical clearance stating you are safe to drive.

Alabama drivers wearing hearing aids will carry a hearing aid restriction on their driver's license, much like the vision correction restriction for drivers requiring glasses.

Top Handicap Accessibility

All driver's license offices within the state are handicapped accessible. If you have a vehicle equipped for your condition and need to be licensed, you'll have to pass a driving test showing you are capable and safe. The vehicle will also be inspected at the time of your test.

Alabama doesn't have an age limit for elderly drivers, as long as a senior continues to pass the vision test and remains in good physical condition.
