Point Reduction in Alaska

Determine Your “Course” of Action
Alaska approves a variety of defensive driving courses for point reduction; after completing a course, the DMV will remove two points from your driving record.
Possible Ticket Dismissal
Sometimes, drivers are allowed to enroll in defensive driving courses for ticket dismissal. Generally, judges decide on a case-by-case basis; this isn’t a standard option.
Complete a AK Driving Safety Course
Alaska approves numerous online and in-class defensive driving courses, so as long as the course is state-approved and/or your judge allows it, you an enroll in the class that best fits your schedule. If you're schedule is tight, an online course might be your best option as you can complete the course from the convenience of your home.
Before registering for a course:
- Make sure it’s on the state’s list of approved courses}.
- You are eligible for point reduction. (You can contact your local DMV for this information.)
- You are eligible for ticket dismissal. (You can contact your court or talk with your judge for this information.)
Submit Requirements to the Court
Most state-approved defensive driving courses provide drivers with completion certificates. Depending on why you enrolled in the course, you’ll provide this certificate to either the DMV (for point reduction) or the court (for ticket dismissal).
NOTE: If you enrolled in the course for ticket dismissal, be sure to complete the course in enough time to receive the certificate before your deadline. Sometimes it takes a few days to receive your completion certificate―this is especially true of online courses―so try to finish the class several days before your deadline.
Check Your Alaska Driving Record
Keeping an eye on your driving record can help you avoid getting too close to license suspension.
Once you complete your driving course, check your driving record to make sure:
- Your points were reduced.
- Your violation doesn’t show up. (This only applies if your judge gave the green light to enroll in a course for ticket dismissal.)
NOTE: If you took the course for ticket dismissal, hold off on checking your driving record until you give the court some time to process your completion certificate.
Get an Auto Insurance Discount
Some auto insurance providers offer discounts to drivers who complete defensive driving courses. After you complete a course, talk with your provider about the possibility of a car insurance discount.
Note that if you want to take a course for the sole purpose of a discount, talk with your provider before enrolling to make sure it’s an option.
