Manuals for Drivers and Students
The Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offers three different driving manuals for drivers and driving students. To read them, you will need to install the free Adobe Reader software on your computer.
Basic Driver Manual―Class D
If you are applying for a basic driver license (Class D, passenger vehicles), you can download a copy of the State of Alaska Driver Manual. It is helpful for review before driver's license testing or for personal periodic review. Parents who will be teaching their teens to drive should also review a copy of this manual.
Motorcycle Driver Manual―Class M1
If you are applying for a motorcycle driver's license (Class M1) you must contact your local AK DMV office to obtain a copy of the motorcycle driver manual, as it is not available online at this time.
If you need information regarding motorcycle license requirements, please see our Motorcycle License page.
Commercial Driver Manual―Class A, B, or C
The comprehensive Commercial Driver License Manual has everything you will need to know to prepare for the CDL written and driving tests.
DMV.org has more information about commercial driver license requirements. You may also find answers to your questions on our Commercial Driver Frequently Asked Questions page.
Bus Drivers
Alaska does not have a separate manual for bus drivers, but there is an entire section of the Commercial Driver Manual devoted to school bus driving.
The requirements for a bus driver license are the same as those for a commercial driver license, but require one or two separate endorsements on your CDL, depending on the type of bus you will be driving. If you plan to drive a school bus, you must have a school bus endorsement and, if the bus you will drive can carry more than 15 people, you'll also need a passenger endorsement.
